Iceberg weighing 315 billion tons

Of the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica broke off the largest iceberg in the last 50 years.

Its thickness is about 210 meters. It's carefully monitoring now - as a giant ice pack may become a threat to ocean vessels.

Scientists had hoped that the iceberg will break away somewhat to the east, where the part of the shelf called "loose tooth." Scientists have predicted that the "loose tooth" fall off between 2010 and 2015. But he still holds.

Helen Fricker stresses that the emergence of breakaway iceberg glacier has nothing to do with global warming.

Satellite images, which are made from the 1990s show that the Amery Ice Shelf is in equilibrium, despite the active melting of its surface during the summer months, CNN reports.

"In Antarctica, a lot of concern, but on this particular shelf no cause for alarm," - said Professor Fricker.

Tides and  wind will drive the iceberg to the west. It will take several years before the iceberg broke into pieces and completely melted.
