Give birth to twins at 74

Erramatti Mangayamma, a resident of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, became pregnant with IVF at the age of 74 and gave birth to two girls using cesarean section.

- The operation went smoothly. Both mother and newborns are healthy and have no complications. However, the woman was sent to the intensive care unit so that she could get out of the stress experienced in the past few hours, the hospital director told the Hindustan Times.

Since Mangayamma will not be able to breastfeed, infants will receive milk from a donor bank.

“An elderly woman was able to bear and give birth to children due to the absence of medical complications such as diabetes and hypertension,” the director added.

Mangayamma and her 80-year-old husband, Raya Rao, were married on March 22, 1962. Over the past 57 years, the couple tried unsuccessfully to have a baby. Thanks to the artificial insemination procedure, the 74-year-old woman was able to become pregnant in January of this year.

Earlier, the oldest woman who became a mother through in vitro fertilization was Indian woman Omkari Panwar, who gave birth to twins in the summer of 2008 at the age of 70
